Overview
MERHA is seeking a part-time Arts & Creative Writer to join our editorial team. This role is focused on telling meaningful stories about art, creative people, culture, and the ideas that shape our communities.
We are looking for a curious and thoughtful writer with a strong voice, a genuine interest in the creative world, and the ability to turn conversations, experiences, and ideas into compelling stories.
The ideal candidate is someone who pays attention to people and their work, asks thoughtful questions, and knows how to find meaning beyond the surface.
Primary responsibilities
- Research and develop original story ideas
- Scout and identify interesting artists, creatives, and cultural voices
- Conduct interviews and develop thoughtful questions
- Write and edit stories for MERHA
- Research and fact-check information
- Work closely with the editorial and creative teams
- Contribute ideas during editorial meetings and story planning
- Participate in interviews, events, and assignments when needed
- Meet assigned deadlines and communicate consistently with the team
- Revise work based on editorial feedback
- Help maintain MERHA’s editorial voice and quality
Qualifications
- Background or experience in journalism, writing, communications, media, or a related field
- Strong writing, storytelling, and research skills
- Strong interviewing and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate comfortably with different people
- Ability to identify compelling stories and approach subjects with curiosity and thoughtfulness
- Hands-on and proactive approach to assignments and projects
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to take initiative, pitch ideas, and contribute to the editorial process
- Open to feedback and comfortable working collaboratively
- Genuine interest in art, creativity, culture, and people
Working expectations
- Part-time position based in Ethiopia
- Participate in scheduled editorial meetings
- Complete assigned stories and meet agreed-upon deadlines
- Pitch original story ideas and contribute to the editorial calendar
- Communicate consistently with the editorial team
- Take initiative in finding stories, sources, and creative opportunities
- Collaborate with writers, photographers, editors, and other creative team members
- Represent MERHA professionally when working with artists, creatives, and external contributors
